Modern Baroke is a playful exploration of socio-economic status and identity.Referencing tenets of baroque art through strong color, dynamism, and emotionalism, the work becomes a reaction against a lower socio-economic status and reimagines status through a child-like lens of imagined luxury. Snarls, knots, netting, and plastics are employed in the work, and hint at underlying feelings of entrapment and foreboding. Other techniques used such as piecing, ruffling, and weaving, harken back to craft origins and an association with the feminine, encouraging a reexamination of their artistic value. Allowing the viewer to reconsider the everyday objects that surround us and the way in which they reflect the inner landscape of our personal histories, exploring the inconsistency between how others see us and how we see ourselves.
